Small community charm in a rural setting, one step away from Paradise, Meadows of Dan is located on the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 178, just at the intersection of Business Route 58 with the Parkway. Friends find their way from many directions; Meadows of Dan is close to Interstate 77 or Interstate 81; near Roanoke, Martinsville and Mount Airy, yet far enough away from cities and towns to have a unique character and special beauty only seen in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
"The mountain", as Meadows of Dan is locally known, has been settled for generations, since before 1800. New roads, especially the Blue Ridge Parkway, have opened the area for easy access for tourism and there are many exciting activities available. Visiting Mabry's Mill, just up the Parkway at Milepost 179, is a favorite trip for thousands of people each year. Walking the mountain arts trails at the mill is like walking back through time to the way things used to be on the mountain, as people made their living the old-fashioned way by grinding their own corn, making their own shoes, and creating their own tools. Further up the Parkway are many hiking trails for long, vigorous hikes or just for walks in the peaceful mountains. Fishing, hunting, camping, or just driving around delighting in the beauty of the mountains can all be enjoyed in the hills around Meadows of Dan.
Meadows of Dan is located on the The Crooked Road, a music trail through Southwest Virginia that highlights the tradition of old-time and bluegrass music in the mountains of Appalachia and the Blue Ridge. The first visitor's kiosk is in place in Meadows of Dan, dedicated at the end of March. The kiosk panels describe the history of the music of talented local performers and will transmit samples of their work.
Meadows of Dan is a small community with many unique shops and interesting people to visit. Musical performances sometimes just spring up anywhere around town. Country stores, antique shops, a special beauty salon, a fudge factory, specialty gift shops, wineries and more all create a special shopping experience in an area surrounded by beauty where visitors become friends and come back repeatedly to shop, sit on porches, and just relax in a special place.
